We are pleased to announce that the New York State Education Department will be launching the Academic Credit Student Intern Program for college-level students seeking academic credit for their internship services.  For this opportunity, we are offering non-paid, credit-based experience for prospective candidates.  Should you have an interest, please be sure to work with your college or university to ensure that they would accommodate a credit-based internship experience as part of your degree program. Due to the State's current fiscal situation, paid opportunities with the New York State Education Department's Internship Programs have been suspended for the Fall, and the forthcoming Spring 2010 semester. Please be sure to continue to check back for additional information/updates as they become available for the Fall 2009/Spring 2010 semester.

The NYS Education Department serves as the administrative arm of the Board of Regents and under the direction of the Commissioner, carries out legislative mandates and Regents policies. The Department plans, funds, monitors, and coordinates educational services from pre-kindergarten through graduate school for local school districts, non-public schools, colleges and universities, and other educational institutions. The Board of Regents and the Department also oversee 48 licensed professions, provide vocational and educational services to individuals with disabilities, guide local government records programs, and operate the State Archives, Library, and Museum.

Academic Credit Student Intern Program

The New York State Education Department has an ongoing commitment to ensuring that the workforce of the Department is reflective of the rich and vastly diverse cultural mosaic that is embodied in the people of the State of New York. As such, the Academic Credit Student Intern Program was established to provide a diverse group of students with work assignments that include opportunities to participate in and contribute to the Department’s role in educational leadership at the State level in the areas of public policy and administration, as well as management and legal services. All internships are part-time when classes are in session, and are specifically designed to provide candidates with learning experiences that will allow them to earn academic credit* towards their degree program.

* Please note that we will tailor our opportunities to the expressed objectives or experiential requirements of your academic program.  However, it is your responsibility to ensure that your internship placement will satisfy your school’s requirements for academic credit.  To that end, it is critical that you begin your discussions with your Academic Advisor regarding a potential internship as soon as possible in order to achieve a successful outcome.
