Child Care Aide 2, SG-12
6:30 pm to 2:30 am - Sunday through Thursday)
C.S.E.A. – Institutional Services

SALARY: $38,612

The New York State School for the Blind in Batavia, NY is seeking a Child Care Aide 2 to work in the Residential setting.  The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Assuring that all phases of a resident’s treatment plan are implemented. These phases include daily living skill training, personal hygiene, medical needs, recreational and socialization activities, assisting professional staff in the areas of physical, occupational, speech and hearing therapies, and addressing dietary needs.
  • Scheduling and assigning Child Care Aide 1s (CCA 1) and Child Care Aide 1 substitutes in order to assure appropriate care and adequate ratios; and maintaining accurate daily records of staff performance, time and attendance and the fulfillment of treatment plans.
  • Assigning staff to particular residents or programs based on the needs of the shift he/she is supervising.
  • Providing supervision and instruction to CCA 1s as to specific tasks when they need to be performed and providing CCA 1s with any necessary written guidelines.
  • Observing, supporting and assessing performance of CCA 1s as to assure treatment plans are being carried out and that efficient and effective care is being provided to each and every resident.
  • Evaluating employees as provided by school policy and collective bargaining agreement.
  • Meeting on a scheduled basis with CCA 1s to discuss observations, new techniques, deficiencies, individual resident problems or other matters influencing the operation of the unit and its staff.
  • Completing time and attendance reports and selected documents in accordance with school and state policies.
  • Identifying housekeeping and maintenance problems and reporting them to the Program Administrator.
  • Reporting and directing intervention and assistance regarding the occurrence of all minor and major incidents on a daily basis.
  • Functioning as a working supervisor as necessary to assist CCA 1s in supervising and providing direct care to residents.
  • Providing feedback to all staff members regarding changes in resident behavior and progress or lack thereof.
  • Providing care and training to physically disabled individuals, requiring moderate to heavy lifting and positioning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  One year of experience in a Child Care Aide 1 position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  In order to meet operational need, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • An Associates Degree or higher in the Education or Human Services field.
  • Experience as a Nurse’s Aide;
  • Experience in behavior modification, orientation and mobility; and/or certification in water safety, CPR, first aid, advanced first aid, or EMT.          
  • Demonstrated skills working with the blind/visually impaired and multiply disabled.
  • High School diploma or equivalency.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children and to participate in physical activities such as swimming.
  • Bus Driver Certification/License under Article 19A
  • Ability to assist students with homework
  • Experience working with Braille, American Sign Language and/or tactile sign
  • Ability to complete and maintain student data charts

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  If you have not been fingerprinted already, fingerprinting through the Department of Criminal Justice Services and a background check through the Office of Children and Family Services is required for employment.  This will be a permanent, 12 month position.
