Assessment Policy, Development and Administration

The New York State Education Department is currently seeking candidates for Assistant Commissioner for Assessment Policy, Development and Administration. The Assistant Commissioner is responsible for the educational testing program for New York State schools and the analysis and assessment of student and school performance. The incumbent of this position will report to the Deputy Commissioner for P-12 Education. The Assistant Commissioner oversees the preparation, production, distribution and administration of Statewide examinations, the management of key vendor contracts related to assessment, and the production of publications to support the learning standards and testing program. The incumbent provides leadership in developing and implementing new assessments that align with the new NYS Common Core learning standards and meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act. The incumbent also participates in the development of next generation assessments through the Race to the Top Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) consortium for which New York is a lead state.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates should have an advanced academic degree and should have demonstrated leadership ability as an administrator or supervisor and practical experience in curriculum, testing and assessment; psychometrics; data collection, analysis and reporting in elementary, middle, or secondary schools or colleges.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is in the exempt class and the incumbent will serve at the discretion of the Commissioner of Education.
