SALARY: $60,616

The New York State Education Department seeks to fill a Senior Historian position in the New York State Library for the New Netherland Project, a translation program of the New York State Library. The Project’s primary objective is to complete the transcription, translation, and publication of all Dutch documents in New York repositories relating to the seventeenth-century colony of New Netherland. It also serves to enhance awareness of the major Dutch contributions to America over the centuries and the strong connections between the two nations. The Senior Historian will translate and transcribe seventeenth century Dutch documents; conduct historical research pertaining to the United States and the Netherlands; prepare grant proposals to obtain additional funding for research; assist with editing and proofreading relevant publications; supervise student interns; develop classroom teaching materials; and serve as a liaison and consultant to various archives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in history, American Studies*, or Public History and three years of professional experience in collections management and/or research OR a doctoral degree in history, American Studies* or Public History.  Qualified candidates must be able to translate and transcribe 17th Century Dutch manuscripts. 

*Including or supplemented with nine credit hours in history.

**Leads to a maximum salary of $74,597 based on annual performance advances.
