SENIOR AUDITOR, SALARY GRADE 18

SALARY: $49,296*

The New York State Education Department (SED) is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Auditor in its Office of Audit Services. This office administers both the internal and external audit functions in SED. Senior Auditors assist in the conduct of audits primarily related to State and federally funded educational programs at school districts, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), private schools, and other agencies and contractors that receive funds administered by the Department; assist in the investigation of complaints of fraud, waste, or abuse; assist in audits of SED programs, activities, and functions; serve as staff auditors on an audit team under supervision of an auditor-in-charge; perform pre-audit surveys, participate in development of audit plans and programs by reviewing relevant documents, records, and reports related to the particular entity to be audited; participate in interview of SED staff and/or staff of the office that is being audited to obtain required and necessary information for the conduct of audits; examine source documents used by entities being audited to obtain documentation needed to accomplish audit objectives; assist in preparation of audit findings, recommending appropriate corrective action when necessary and participate in audit conferences.  They will also assist in the review of financial statements and A-133 Single Audits of school districts, BOCES, private schools and colleges and universities; and be responsible for other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service as a Senior Auditor OR one year of permanent competitive service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law OR be reachable on the eligible list for Professional Accounting and Auditing Positions.  Candidates who are reachable on the eligible list for Professional Accounting and Auditing Positions will be appointed as an Auditor Trainee 1 and must complete a two-year traineeship unless otherwise indicated below:


To be appointed at the Auditor Trainee 2 level, candidates must have one year of professional accounting/auditing experience or a master's degree in accounting.  Upon successful completion of 12 months as a Trainee 2, candidates will be permanently appointed as a Senior Auditor.

To be appointed as a Senior Auditor, candidates must have a currently valid Certified Public Accountant license and registration issued by New York State or a master's degree in accounting AND one year of full-time professional experience in accounting/auditing or financial internal or field auditing, responsible for the full range of activities in the design and/or review, analysis and management of accounting systems, resulting in the preparation of, or recommendations on, financial statements in accord with generally accepted accounting principles OR  two years of full-time professional experience as described immediately above.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  This will be a permanent appointment.  This position requires 30% - 40% overnight travel. 

*Leads to a maximum salary of $61,143 based on annual performance advances.
