Nurse I (Manual Communications) - SG-14

LOCATION: Rome
SALARY: $39,587*

The New York State Education Department’s School for the Deaf is seeking applicants for the position of Nurse 1 (Manual Communications).  Duties of this position will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Administering medications to students;
  • Providing first aid to injured students;
  • Admitting ill students to the infirmary & providing nursing care;
  • Discharging recuperated students back to school or the dormitory;
  • Discharging ill students home to parental care;
  • Sending ill students to doctor’s office for evaluation & treatment;
  • Administering nebulizer treatments to asthmatic students;
  • Administering and/or disconnecting G-tube feeding on a student;
  • Participating in sign language classes for effective communication; and
  • Conferring with staff and/or parents regarding student needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in New York State or possess a limited permit to practice nursing in New York State. Candidates with limited permits must obtain NYS licensure within one year from the date of appointment.  In addition, candidates must be able to communicate in American Sign Language at a proficiency level sufficient to perform the functions of the job.  

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:   Fingerprinting through the Department of Criminal Justice Services and a background check with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services are required for employment.  This will be a permanent appointment.

*Leads to a maximum salary of $50,310.
