Nurse 1 (Substitute) SG-NS (PEF)

SALARY: $19.72/hour*

The New York State School for the Deaf is seeking to fill the position of Nurse 1, Substitute. Appointment is contingent upon Division of the Budget approval. Duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Administer medications to students;
  • Provide first aid to injured students;
  • Admit ill students to the infirmary & provide nursing care;
  • Discharge recuperated students back to school or to the dormitory;
  • Discharge ill students home to parental care;
  • Send ill students to doctor’s office for evaluation & treatment;
  • Administer nebulizer treatments to asthmatic students;
  • Participate in sign language classes for effective communication; and
  • Confer with staff and/or parents regarding student needs.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in New York State as a Registered Nurse.  Candidates must also be able to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:   Fingerprinting through the Department of Criminal Justice Services and a background check with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services are required for employment.  This is a temporary, hourly position which requires incumbents to be on call on an as needed basis for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift assignments.

*Leads to a maximum salary of $25.17/hour
