Translator (Manual Communications) -- SG-14

LOCATION: Bronx
SALARY: $39,587*

The New York State Education Department’s Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) is seeking to fill the position of Translator (Manual Communications).  The incumbent of this position will provide interpretation services to a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor who is deaf or hearing impaired including providing sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting among colleagues, consumers and constituents.  The incumbent would also be responsible for performing such tasks as gathering information verbally, attending meetings or conferences with the counselor and scheduling appointments in situations where there may be communication difficulties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must possess one of the following certificates issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID): Certificate of Transliteration, Certificate of Interpretation or Comprehensive Skills Certificate OR be eligible to sit for RID certification AND possess two years of experience interpreting for the deaf OR be eligible to sit for RID certification AND  possess either one year of college coursework in a Human Services field or one year of training in a specialized deaf interpretive services program AND one year of experience interpreting for the deaf.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  This will be a temporary appointment contingent on the continued employment of the Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor who the incumbent is assigned to assist. 

*Leads to a maximum salary of $50,310 based on annual performance advances.
