STATEMENT FROM EDUCATION COMMISSIONER
JOHN B. KING, JR. ON THE SIGNING INTO LAW OF THE
QUALITY AND EXCELLENCE IN
BUSINESS AND TRADE SCHOOLS BILL
The Quality and Excellence in Business and Trade Schools bill (A.7859-A/S.4268-C) signed into law today has been a priority of the Board of Regents. This new law will modernize the Bureau of Proprietary Schools Supervision’s authority to regulate proprietary schools and enact more effective tools to protect students enrolled in this growing and critical sector. Governor Cuomo, Majority Leader Skelos, Speaker Silver, Senate Higher Education Committee Chair LaValle and Assembly Higher Education Committee Chair Glick, have helped protect New York students and their families while at the same time recognizing the societal and economic importance of proprietary schools. The Education Department will continue to work with the sector, including the Coalition of New York State Career Schools, the New York Beauty Schools Association, and the New York English Schools Association, to ensure that this sector of New York’s education system remains vibrant and accountable to consumers.
