STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT COMMISSIONER KING
HONORED WITH BUILDERS OF THE NEW NEW YORK AWARD
Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr. was honored Monday night by the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) and received the Builders of the NEW New York award.
Commissioner King and four other awardees were recognized for their outstanding commitment and contributions that NYIC recognizes as improving society through promotion of civic participation, education, and leadership for New York’s diverse immigrant community and the State overall.
Under the Commissioner’s leadership, the New York State Education Department has shown a commitment to bilingual and English language learners. For example, in fall 2012, the Department endorsed the federal DREAM Act and drafted the Education Equity for DREAMers Act, which was introduced in the State Legislature. The Department continues to work through its policies and regulations to support and empower English language learners and bilingual students to succeed in the State’s education system and graduate career and college ready.
